Job Description

The Senior Commissioning Technician (Instrument / Electrical) is responsible for performing commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and validation of electrical and instrumentation systems in industrial projects, including shutdowns, oil & gas plants, refineries, and power generation facilities. The role ensures that all systems are commissioned safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and HSE regulations.

Commissioning & Testing

  • Perform commissioning, loop checking, and function testing of instrumentation (transmitters, analyzers, control valves, and PLC/DCS systems).
  • Conduct testing and commissioning of electrical systems, including switchgear, transformers, MCCs, UPS systems, and motors.
  • Carry out calibration and configuration of smart field instruments (HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus).
  • Perform site acceptance tests (SATs) and support factory acceptance tests (FATs) for equipment and systems.
  • Ensure proper integration of instruments with DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems.
  • Conduct insulation resistance, continuity, and high-voltage testing for electrical components.
  • Verify and troubleshoot protection relays, circuit breakers, and control systems.

Troubleshooting & Problem Solving

  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve faults in electrical and instrument systems during commissioning.
  • Provide technical solutions for issues related to control loops, field devices, and communication protocols.
  • Work closely with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to address commissioning challenges.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain detailed commissioning logs, test reports, and punch list items.
  • Ensure commissioning procedures and checklists are followed and documented properly.
  • Update as-built documentation, loop diagrams, and wiring schematics as required.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (IEC, NEC, ATEX, API, OSHA, NFPA).
  • Work under Permit to Work (PTW) systems, ensuring proper safety procedures (LOTO, confined space, hazardous area classifications).

Safety & Quality Assurance

  • Adhere to site safety protocols and participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety audits.
  • Follow proper hazard identification and risk mitigation measures for commissioning activities.
  • Ensure instruments and electrical equipment are installed and commissioned per project quality standards.

Coordination & Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor junior commissioning technicians in electrical and instrumentation tasks.
  • Coordinate with construction, operations, and HSE teams to ensure smooth commissioning workflows.
  • Provide technical support to vendors, contractors, and project stakeholders.
